These footnotes should help you understand to who\u2019s who and who did what.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c32f0b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8c32f0b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Page 1: The asylum seekers \u2018Dispersal Scheme\u2019<br \/><\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\">During 1999\/2000 and for a few years after under a Labour government, the Home Office introduced the \u2018Dispersal Scheme\u2019 which meant that asylum-seeking families were sent around the UK to \u2018relieve\u2019 social and political pressure in the south of England. Families arrived In Scotland with very little and were expected to pay for food by using vouchers that they were given by the government rather than money. This practice was brought to an end after public criticism of it for being embarrassing and degrading for the people having to use vouchers in the shops instead of money.<\/p><div class=\"eistxt img-right\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eis.org.uk\/Content\/images\/Equality\/GlasgowGirls\/Glasgow-Girls-ICONsmallsmall.JPG\" alt=\"Glasgow Girls drawing\" width=\"350\" \/><\/div><h2><strong>Page 2:\u00a0 Overcoming trauma<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\">Traumatised children received counselling and support from experts from The Haven Project, sponsored by the charity \u2018Action for Children in Conflict.\u2019 Dr Christine Puckering, Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Royal Hospital for Sick Children and Dr Aileen Blower, Lecturer in Child Psychiatry, Yorkhill Hospital, both came to the aid of children, helping them find a way out of the trauma they had suffered.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The late\u00a0<strong>Richard Morran,<\/strong>\u00a0Ann McFarlane and Frances Hume worked tirelessly for\u00a0<strong>Save the Children<\/strong>\u00a0engaging young people from a wide range of communities and developing their creativity through music, film-making and activism culminating in the short film \u2018Unjust Treatment-Detention of children in Britain\u2019(2008) as part of the \u2018No Place for a Child Coalition\u2019 to end child detention in the UK.<\/p><p class=\"eistxt\"><br \/><strong>Aileen Ritchie<\/strong>\u00a0came to us as a Glasgow City Council writer-in-residence with young asylum seekers. Her empathy and commitment to drama work with children and young people led to her setting up the Knightswood Youth Theatre which has now matured into Ignite Theatre, a charity free to young people in Glasgow to develop a wide range of skills through drama. Aileen is Ignite\u2019s Creative Director. \u00a0<br \/><br \/>Ninian Perry, Claire Docherty and Noel Bridgeman from the\u00a0<strong>Paragon Ensemble<\/strong>\u00a0encouraged composition and performance from Drumchapel High school pupils that led to a performance with the classical ensemble called \u2018Challenging Peace\u2019 in a concert celebrating the birthday of Martin Luther King.<br \/><br \/>The\u00a0<strong>Carnival Group<\/strong>\u00a0was an extra-curricular activity group that took pupils out into the wider community to celebrate the diverse cultures in the school by developing their skills in dance, music, performance and the creative construction of costumes.<\/p><h2><strong>Page 2: Kurdistan<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\"><strong>Saddam Hussein<\/strong>\u00a0was President of Iraq from 1979-2003. In coming to power, he suppressed the Kurdish people who wished to gain independence from Iraq. Key members of Roza\u2019s family were killed as a result.\u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>Page<\/strong>\u00a03:<strong>\u00a0The mouse<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\">In the poem \u2018To a Mouse\u2019 \u00a0by Robert Burns, the ploughman accidentally turns a mouse out of its nest, making it a refugee.<\/p><h2><strong>Page 4: Campaigning<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\"><strong>Social media<\/strong>\u00a0was in its early stages. The Glasgow Girls campaign was mainly conducted via email, letter, phone and the mainstream media. Facebook had launched in 2004 but the girls opted in 2005 for the now unused Bebo as they charted the internet. Twitter launched\u00a0in 2006.\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"eistxt\"><strong>David Starkey<\/strong>\u00a0is a right-wing historian.<br \/><br \/><strong>Dungavel<\/strong>\u00a0Detention Centre, a former prison- is situated outside Strathaven. There have been many campaigns to shut it down.<\/p><div class=\"eistxt img-right\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eis.org.uk\/Content\/images\/Equality\/GlasgowGirls\/11small.JPG\" alt=\"peace\" width=\"300\" height=\"227\" \/><\/div><p class=\"eistxt\"><strong>Kingsway<\/strong>\u00a0Health and Well-Being Centre at the bottom of one of the high rise flats in Drumchapel became a hub for refuge, advice and meetings and was run by Martin Coyle , Co-ordinator, and Jassim Johe, Asylum Development worker. The Kingsway Women\u2019s Group, and the Kingsway Amnesty Group were set up here with Jean Donnachie and Noreen Real helping to lead. Both women spoke out against the actions of the Home Office and the UK Border Force. They won \u2018Scotswoman of the Year 2006\u2019 for their service to the community.<\/p><h2><strong>Page 5: Key people who helped the Campaign<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\"><strong>Frank McMaster<\/strong>\u00a0has been a life-long human rights and ecology campaigner, gardener and more recently a Bikeability trainer in the West End of Glasgow. A former pilot, Frank is well-versed in tracking flights.<\/p><p class=\"eistxt\"><strong>Lindsay Hill\u00a0<\/strong>is an inspirational independent film-maker and producer who when working for the BBC helped film and produce a ground-breaking series on children\u2019s issues called \u2018Tales from the Edge\u2018 in which young people told their own stories in their own words. Two films documenting the reactions and activism of the girls were made-the Amnesty International award winning \u2018The Glasgow Girls\u2019 2005\u2019, and \u2018The Children Who Disappear\u20192006 which followed the Glasgow Girls taking their campaign to the Scottish Parliament. The subsequent National Theatre of Scotland musical, \u00a0\u2018Glasgow Girls\u2019 and the BBC Three film \u2018Glasgow Girls\u2019 were based on these documentaries.\u00a0<\/p><h2><strong>Page 5: National and international activity<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\">The Glasgow Girls campaign visited the\u00a0<strong>Scottish Parliament<\/strong>\u00a0in Edinburgh on a number of occasions and persuaded the then\u00a0<strong>First Minister, Jack McConnell<\/strong>\u00a0to try to protect children from detention.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>The campaign included presenting the document \u2018Dawn Raids, Detention and Deportation, Statement of Pupils, Drumchapel HIgh School\u2019 to the Scottish contribution to the UK Report to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in Edinburgh 2006<\/p><h2><strong>Broad support<\/strong><\/h2><p class=\"eistxt\">We were supported by, and supported, a wide range of organisations not mentioned here including The Scottish Refugee Council, Positive Action in Housing, Unity, The Refugee Survival Trust amongst many others.\u00a0The EIS (Educational Institute of Scotland) is the biggest teacher trade union in Scotland. It has a long history of challenging racism and of standing up for refugees and asylum-seekers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-616e4b8 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"616e4b8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\"
