Building racial literacy means people feel more able to navigate challenging situations and have the language to move beyond any strong emotions that may arise.<\/li><\/ul><p><strong><br \/>Reflect on: <\/strong>Consider a situation where you would speak to a new colleague about racism. What feelings, thoughts, and emotions arise? How would the feelings be different depending on whether the person was white or a person of colour?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dff9c67 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"dff9c67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-23fe014 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"23fe014\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Racial literacy involves training aimed at growing our ability to move through racial discomfort, so we can have productive conversations and address racism. Unfortunately, fear of using the wrong language, embarrassing ourselves, being isolated, being labelled racist or \u2018difficult\u2019, can be paralysing and hinder our anti-racist activism.<\/p><p>We must recognise that white people cannot know what it is like to experience racism as this is intrinsically tied to historical oppression, and systemic inequality. White privilege means you and others like you are not systemically and have not been historically discriminated against on the basis of your race \u2013 but this does not mean that you have never struggled or faced inequality, just that your race is not the reason for this.<\/p><p>In order to move through discomfort and become more confident talking about racism, it will be important to self-reflect on our own racial identity and practice talking about this.
