the planning and implementation of LGBT education in Scotland. The EIS affiliated with the TIE campaign in 2017 and EIS members have been involved with leading the work on designing resources and curricular plans for LGBT+ inclusive education.<\/p><p>The EIS has a LGBT informal network, and LGBT sub-committee, which feeds directly into the work of the EIS Equality Committee, and advises on LGBT issues. This approach ensures that learners see themselves, the diversity of their families, and the world around them in what they learn; and contributes to addressing the stigma and stereotypes that can lead to prejudice and bullying.<\/li><li>LGBT Inclusive Education is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.scot\/publications\/lgbti-inclusive-education-working-group-report\/\">currently being implemented<\/a> in Scotland and it is now the responsibility of all schools to consider how they can take this forward in their own settings. This should be embedded within the school curriculum and a part of year-round ordinary learning.<\/li><li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lgbteducation.scot\">lgbteducation.scot<\/a> is the national platform for this work, and includes free professional learning, teaching materials, guidance, and an implementation toolkit for teachers in Scotland. Resources are available here for primary and secondary schools.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dff9c67 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"dff9c67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-23fe014 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"23fe014\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Scotland\u2019s commitment to LGBT inclusive education came 19 years after the repeal of Section 28, which effectively prohibited the teaching of LGBT inclusive education.<\/p>\n<p>Section 28 also known as Section 2A, was a piece of legislation introduced by Thatcher\u2019s Conservative government, that effectively prohibited the \u201cpromotion of homosexuality\u201d by local authorities. It was in effect from 1988 to 2000 in Scotland. One of the first legislations enacted by the new Scottish Parliament was to repeal this section, after a successful campaign led by the Equality Network.<\/p>\n<p>There was an earlier attempt to repeal the legislation introduced by the Labour Government in Westminster, but this was defeated. Theresa May, then Shadow Education Secretary called it a \u201cvictory for the common sense\u201d. It would take until 2003 for the clause to be repealed in England and Wales.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In relation to schools, the section prohibited schools to \u201dpromote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship\u201d. There was widespread confusion with regards to what constituted such \u201cpromotion\u201d and fear, therefore, with regards to engaging in any form of discussion related to LGBT families or lives.<\/p>\n<p>Although over 20 years have passed since Section 28 was repealed, there will still be many education professionals who may feel worried about teaching LGBT inclusive education, and are unsure about whether they are permitted to do so. It is important therefore that educators are supported in becoming confident in this area.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7f6604b elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"7f6604b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\"
