Do you think members in your local area, are familiar with these processes? <\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-4eb7bbd\" data-id=\"4eb7bbd\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d07e96 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6d07e96\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Learning points:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Homophobia (prejudice related to being gay or lesbian), biphobia (prejudice related to being bisexual), and transphobia (prejudice related to being transgender) can manifest in a variety of different ways in school and education settings, including through the use of pejorative language (e.g. the epithet \u201cthat\u2019s\/you\u2019re so gay\u201d) to more direct bullying behaviours related to actual or perceived LGBT identity. Like all forms of prejudice, they do not exist in a silo, can be escalatory, have a negative impact on learners, and should be addressed by teachers and schools.<\/li><li>Many children and young people can experience this form of prejudice while they are at school. This can, and does, impact learners who actually are lesbian, gay, bisexual and\/or transgender, and it can also be experienced by learners who are not, but who are perceived or assumed to be by others. This is common for learners at both primary and secondary school.<\/li><li>Research has found that 44% of secondary pupils had a first memory of homophobic bullying occurring in primary school (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiG9YWf8aD7AhVFoVwKHZ-rDUIQFnoECAUQAQ&amp;url=https:\/\/www.highland.gov.uk\/download\/downloads\/id\/12122\/homophobic_bullying_report_november_2014.pdf&amp;usg=AOvVaw2hJFeg1ppYoEDXjB83nJFR\">The Highland Council<\/a>, 2014), while 10% of young people rated the experience of school for LGBT people as \u201cgood\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lgbtyouth.org.uk\/news\/2022\/launch-life-in-scotland-for-lgbt-young-people-2022\/\">LGBT Youth Scotland<\/a>, 2022) and 56% had experienced bullying behaviours more frequently than \u201conce or twice\u201d during their time in education (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tie.scot\/reports\">Time for Inclusive Education<\/a>, 2020).<\/li><li>A recent EIS survey found a fifth of LGBT respondents were not \u2018out\u2019 at their work.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dff9c67 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"dff9c67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-23fe014 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"23fe014\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Education is an important sphere in which societal norms are enmeshed within the consciousness of young people and adult learners. There can be no doubt about the harmful effects that the deliberate exclusion and silencing of LGBT existence has had on both generations in school and teaching during this time, and what lingering effects remains in our education system today, also in relation to teachers\u2019 fears of parental complaints related to this topic. Still today in Scotland, LGBT rights activists and spokespeople face harassment, exclusion and targeted attacks. TIE offers support to anyone who experience online abuse in relation to LGBT inclusion.<\/p>\n<p>LGBT organisations and activists have warned that homophobic, biphobic and transphobic attacks are on the rise. The disinformation and toxicity surround the Gender Recognition Act reform (which aims to make the process of obtaining legal recognition of a trans person\u2019s gender, less intrusive), also plays a part in this. A link to EIS\u2019 advice for members on trans inclusion in schools, can be found within in the further information, below, alongside links to handy visuals that provide useful counter narratives to misinformation. At a time when members may be worried by what they read in the media in relation to trans inclusion, there is a greater need for sharing accurate information.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the spread of misinformation risks backstepping on progress made towards equality for LGBT people, and the consequences can be serious. LGBT Youth Scotland\u2019s Life in Scotland Report in 2018, found that 71% of LGBT young people experienced bullying on the grounds of being LGBT and 35% had experienced a hate crime or incident in the last year. Discrimination and identity-based harassment and bullying has significant mental health impacts. 84% of LGBT young people and 96% of transgender young people indicated they had a mental health problem.<\/p>\n<p>Negative attitudes and stereotypes towards LGBT people are risk factors to both pupils and school staff&#8217;s health, safety, and wellbeing. Under the Equality Act (2010), local authorities have a duty to prevent discrimination and to promote good relations between people of different sexualities, as this is a protected characteristic. Schools should take proactive measures to eliminate prejudice and tackle this effectively when it occurs.<\/p>\n<p>A recent TIE survey found that over 70% of parents are aware and supportive of LGBT inclusive education, and this figure improves when those respondents are presented with information about the content of the available teaching resources.
